Doing it with style
No javascript, no hacks, no expressions, just CSS, XHTML.
A fairly simple menu in that it is a single level, but also fairly complex in that it uses split sliding links for browsers that support CSS3 transitions (Safari, Chrome, Opera and Firefox 4 at the moment). Internet Explorer and Firefox 3.x will see an instant change of image to text.
There is also a CSS3 shadow beneath the menu and the use of @font-face to use a Clearface font which is visible in all modern browsers.
Hovering over the left side of each link will slide the image right and reveal some descriptive text. Hovering over the right side of each link will slide the image left to reveal the same text.
This gives an unusual action to the menu when scanning from left to right and back again.
Tested in IE6, IE7, IE7 emulation, IE8, Firefox, Opera, Safari & Chrome. It should also work in Mac browsers.
