CSS MENUSiPad iMage flyout menu

Information

The problem with using multi-level CSS only menus on the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch is that once you have tapped the top level link to open a sub-menu there is no way to close it again.

In the previous menus I have used a pop-up link that will only be visible to iPad etc. users and tapping this will close any open sub menu.

However, I have just discovered another 'feature' of the Safari Mobile browser whilst working on a menu for a client, and that is if you have a sub menu open you can tap an image (not a background image) and this will close any open sub menu. It also looks like the image must have a higher z-index than the menu.

After checking various other elements I have not found one that will do the same job.

So you can have a permanent image as in the demo above where the image is not part of the menu, or you can have the image held in the last <li class="close"> of the menu which is normally hidden from view but can be made to appear when tapping any of the top level preceeding <li>'s using li:hover ~ li.close {display:block;}.

So another breakthrough and first for CSS play.

This menu has been tested in IE6, IE7, IE8, IE9, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome, Flock, SeaMonkey, iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
