Doing it with style
For IE7+, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome, SeaMonkey, Avant, Flock, iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch
This menu uses a simple nested unordered list with just three classnames. Two in the containing div and one to producethe right aligned dropdown with left flyouts.
1. class="cssplayMenu red": the 'cssplayMenu' class is used to style all of the menu elements, and the 'red' is to style the color of the hover state for the list items.
2. class="left": to style the right aligned dropdown and left flyouts structure.
I have used a simple jQuery routine to change the color of the hover state to show how this will look. All you need to do is change the color class in the containing div.
Although the menu will work in all the browsers listed above, the full styling will not be seen in IE7 and IE8, these browsers will see rectangular single color list items with no drop shadow.
This will work on the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and a 'Close X' button will appear centrally above the menu when a dropdown menu is shown. Tapping this will close the open menu structure.
Tapping a top level list item, with a dropdown menu, twice will take you to the link page.
For this demo I have also made use of Google fonts which can be easily added to web pages. See Google web fonts
