Information

I have been attempting to do this on and off for the past year or more, but failed to make it work in IE5.5 and IE6.

Shapes such as triangle, boxes, pentagons, hexagons, octogons have all been done to death, but the five point star was only possible in browsers that understood transparent borders and that meant that IE5.5 and IE6 could never produce this result.

But thanks to a chance email from Jeff Corley there is an answer.

The above demonstration works in all browsers including IE5.5, IE6, IE7, Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Mozilla and Safari (PC version).

The trick is to use 'dashed' transparent borders instead of 'solid'. IE5.5 and IE6 render these using the color of the font being used BUT as dashed borders start with a transparent gap the dashed color is never displayed and the borders are 'transparent'. This works for border art, but would not be of any use for normal border transparency.

So there you have it, border art transparency in IE5.5 and IE6 ...sorted :)
